I was born and raised, and currently live, in a small city in California called Loma Linda. As a dietitian and nutritionist here, I think a lot about how the foods we eat can help us feel better and thrive into our old age. Here is everything I eat in a day to help promote longevity and overall well-being. Whole grains can help keep your blood sugar levels stable because they are absorbed more slowly into the body. If I opt for soft tofu, I'll cut it into cubes, drizzle it with Vietnamese Hoisin sauce, and sprinkle it with furikake, a seasoning made from nori seaweed, sesame seeds, sugar and salt.

Inmate Jeremy Zielinski and five others successfully sued the state to view Monday's solar eclipse. "It's impossible to overstate how sublime it is," Zielinski told Business Insider through his attorney. AdvertisementOne of the six incarcerated men who sued New York state for the chance to view Monday's solar eclipse hailed the group's success as "sublime." Advertisement"More than anything, it's a chance to celebrate that beneath any illusions of difference, we all have things in common," Zielinksi told Business Insider through his attorney. The state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision did not immediately respond to a request for comment by Business Insider on Monday.

Six inmates at a New York prison will get the chance to view the upcoming solar eclipse after they sued. The state corrections department ultimately agreed to let the inmates observe the eclipse. AdvertisementSix men incarcerated at a New York prison will be able to observe the rare solar eclipse that will cross the United States next week after they sued the state. The incarcerated men argued in their lawsuit that the corrections department's decision to lock down its prisons statewide on Monday illegally prohibited them from observing the solar eclipse. Though Woodbourne Correctional Facility is not included on that list, an interactive map by NASA shows that the prison will be impacted, at least partially, by the solar eclipse.

Read previewA rare solar eclipse will soon cross the United States — and six inmates at a New York prison are so desperate to witness the phenomenon that they're suing the state corrections department over it. Related storiesThe lawsuit argues that the corrections department's decision to lock down its prisons statewide on April 8 "illegally prohibits" the group of inmates from observing the solar eclipse. Though Woodbourne Correctional Facility is not included on that list, an interactive map by NASA shows that the prison will be impacted by the solar eclipse. No inmates will be allowed outside to watch the solar eclipse, according to Mailey. The lawsuit says that the atheist plaintiff was granted a special request to view the solar eclipse, but that was before the lockdown rules were put in place.

Adventists in Loma Linda tend to live up to 10 years longer than the average American. At 84, Dr. Loida Medina often plays pickleball for three hours straight with her friends who are also in their 80s. As residents of Loma Linda and Seventh-day Adventists, Medina and her loved ones consider staying active to be extremely significant for living a longer, more fulfilled life. "See, longevity is exercise and community," Medina said in the new Netflix series, "Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones." CNN —Millions of children are heading to school in August during the worst heat wave in recorded human history. Despite excessive heat, school is a necessity for a child’s emotional, mental, social and educational achievement, a lesson well learned during the pandemic, experts say. Worried families can best prepare their children to attend school in a heat wave by being aware of their school’s facilities and needs. Parents and caregivers should investigate the cooling conditions at their child’s school and advocate for change if needed, Patel said. Teach your child the warning signsEven if your child’s school is cool, many youngsters attend recess or participate in after-school activities that may be outdoors.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear an evangelical Christian mail carrier's employment discrimination claim in a case that could force employers to do more to accommodate the religious practices of their workers. Postal Service could have granted his request that he be spared Sunday shifts based on his religious belief that it is a day of worship and rest. Based on his request for an accommodation, his managers arranged for other postal workers to deliver packages on Sundays until July 2018. Upon resigning, he sued the Postal Service for failing to accommodate his request. In the earlier ruling, the court said that employers are not required to make accommodation if it would impose even a minimal burden.
The Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America doesn’t support same-sex marriage. It demonstrates that the American model of representative democracy — though riddled with divisions — can still address complex contemporary issues. This victory was achieved because the Respect for Marriage Act also includes important principles of religious freedom for those who don’t endorse same-sex marriage itself. On the right, criticism has largely centered on calling for even stronger religious freedom amendments or strenuously objecting to the inclusion of same-sex marriage in any federally codified definition of marriage. But over time, the model of political pluralism embodied in the Respect for Marriage Act can help renew national trust.
In his new book, "The Blue Zones American Kitchen: 100 Recipes to Live to 100," Dan Buettner "identified the world's longest-lived areas (blue zones) and studied the patterns and lifestyles that seem to explain their populations' longevity." Blue zones are defined by Buettner as populations with the highest rates of living to 100 – or becoming centenarians – and the highest middle-age life expectancies. "The people in the blue zones live up to a decade longer than average Americans and spend a fraction of what most [of] the rest of us do on health care," Buettner wrote. Many of these communities have more opportunities to walk from place to place and tend to stress much less than most Americans. But, after analyzing over 150 dietary surveys that capture "the daily eating habits of people in the blue zones over the past 80 years," these were the most common foods included in their diets.
REUTERS/Arlette BashiziKINSHASA, Dec 5 (Reuters) - Democratic Republic of Congo's government on Monday said 272 civilians were killed in a massacre in the eastern town of Kishishe last week, raising the death toll from a previous estimate of 50. It also said the rebels were backed by members of the Rwandan army, a frequent accusation by the Congolese government which Rwanda has consistently denied. Congo's army and the M23, a Tutsi-led militia, have been locked in fighting for months in the country's east. The death toll was announced by Congolese industry minister Julien Paluku, speaking at a press briefing with government spokesman Patrick Muyaya. "The United States urges Rwanda to honor commitments made in Luanda, including ending Rwanda's support to M23," Blinken said on Twitter.
